Congratulations Commissioner Kacii

Hello all!

It is my pleasure to congratulate Kacii for her promotion to the rank of server Commissioner after her superb run as our server Deputy!

Kacii's story is one of persistence and expectations. I've known Kacii for a VERY long time, and have seen AND heard about her exploits going back as far back as the early days of Gunia's server. Although young, she was a player of vast presence, with a strong spirit, an independent flair, a personal sense of justice, and a frequent hunger for conversation and roleplay. She reminded me a bit of our old staff member Ajjget, but with a rock-solid stability about her that always made her desirable as a potential staff member.

She was SO desirable, in fact, that she always turned down initial requests for a Deputy spot, or simply never expressed much interest in being anything other than a player of the people; and for the longest time remained rather aloof of any prospects of advancement in the server. Despite befriending many of us, occasionally volunteering for citizen whitelist reviews, and standing up to bad players and bullies on the server, she simply wanted to remain fiercely independent as a player. It was an admirable trait, so I personally had to respect that even as I shelved any prospect of ever seeing her even as a Deputy... and more so after she finally formally declined an official offer by Mimi to become a Deputy. She would forever remain as one of the greatest players we ever had (and a good sport for chicken-related humor), and that commitment is certainly paid a homage to in my April Fool's 2015 article. ^^

But then... a miracle happened! I'm not sure if our culture finally crept up on her, or she grew older, or her ambitions changed, or what not... but suddenly, and during a very opportune time when we needed help, she was ready to agree to Mimi's proposal! It was a happy day for all of us when she finally agreed to become Deputy! And she has taken up this mantle with fierce devotion, a curious attention to detail, a willingness to help in various circumstances, and an increased confidence in her open communication with the rest of the staff members and myself (whereas once upon a time she seemed almost afraid to talk to me). She has been a remarkable Deputy, and has never been shy of taking up tasks that belie her young age, only seeking help from other staff members or myself when absolutely necessary! All her best traits from before as a fantastic player have been amplified several times fold, and she truly demonstrates her Gulliver Minecraft server experience and boundless potential to the team every day!

She has been a great friend to many of us, a phenomenal story-teller to all the uninitiated players wanting to know more about our little community, and a proud guardian to those even younger and vulnerable than herself -- and I feel absolutely privileged to have such a talented person on my team! Now that she's the best she can be as a Deputy, and proved herself to be an individual trustworthy of greater powers, I feel it's only fitting to direct her potential further by nominating her to a Commissioner position. May her new privileges and responsibilities allow her to explore new avenues of personal growth, as she continues being a great keeper of our community's proud history, legacy and future!

Kacii was voted in through a parliamentary-style staff election featuring an incredible 94% voter turnout, with 16 votes in favor and one abstain due to unavailability!

I want to thank all staff who participated in giving Kacii such an enthusiastic vote of confidence, as well as all players who have helped make her the remarkable staff member she is today!

You Have Now Entered... The Twilight Zone

Alo peoplez!!
We have, in a way, two Thanksgiving presents to offer the server!  ^.^

#1:  The ENTIRE map of the expanded world has now been explored!!!  You can go ahead and visit our Dynmap to see the entire map all pristine and clear!  Special thanks to all of you who helped explore all the unloaded chunks, especially Lomgren who was at it for weeks!  ^.^

http://bigsister.mcserver.ws:8123/#

#2:  We now have a converted Twilight Forest area imported into Big Sister!!  Many of you wanted to visit the modded Twilight Forest, but without being able to do that... I figured it would be better (and cooler) to... BRING TWILIGHT FOREST TO US!!!  It took about two weeks to scout out a good area and then make all the necessary block conversions to make the map accessible to 1.6.4; and there are still many more things to tweak to make the area truly shine.  But it's here, and it's public land so you can do whatever you'd like in this new Twilight Forest National Park!  From claiming a Mushroom Palace room as a home, to building roads through the thorn bushes, to harvesting the mysterious Cheese Mushrooms!

As far as how to get there... There is a TP at Spawn atop a very OBVIOUS Twilight Forest feature that's been on our server forever, and which has has limited use... till today.  Hope you don't mind a little climb and some leaves in your hair.  :P

No worries about having to shrink or be normal-sized to get to this teleporter, as there is a resizer over at the Twilight Forest landing area now.  Future teleporters may be built, as well as a road/bridge to here that will be created atop some future imported islands.

Have fun!!!  :)

New World Border

Hello all,

Consider this a belated anniversary present, but I have officially abandoned the Ark initiative of building within a limited 7000x7000 block area, and created a new physical World Border that stretches from x-8192 z-8192, to x8192 z8192, offering a full usable world size of 32x32 square Regions (with each Region composed of 32x32 Chunks).  This is VERY big, and offers twice or thrice as much growth opportunity compared to the Ark.. and although a lot of this area is water, this may change soon as oceans offer prime real estate for imports from other mods.

Effective immediately, all users can now build past the original Ark border, and are free to explore, mine, found towns or pave roads up to the glass world border (which can't be traversed anyway). All preexisting towns and structures that were built past the Ark are now official and can be left in place.  I encourage all users to explore as much of this new world as possible to help us see how much our home has expanded.

Thank you!

Two-Year Server Anniversary Address

Alo everyone!

I promised a two-year anniversary address, and I am happy to deliver... even if it's not as punctual as I expected (but hey, it's still within the weekend celebration!  So once more, time to get all dressed up for this....

Two years... just writing it doesn't do much justice to the magnitude of this accomplishment. We have literally survived, and thrived, for TWO years, and this when many Minecraft servers barely survive two months, others two weeks.  The longest-lasting Gulliver server, our parent server [Gunia's Gulliver Server], endured for 1.5 years; knowing this, I'm happy to preserve the adage that "no parent should outlive their child".  And all this without ever resetting our world map (destroying everyone's investment of time, love and talent), ever losing sight of where we came from (preserving the memory of Dravic's, Gunia's, Skyscraper's and others), without ever going back on our core principles.  In this we succeeded on what we set out to do... be a rock-solid center of stability for those who can call our server a virtual home.

Often when I'm working from home, and have various machines turned on at my desk, I will have my Chromebook turned on with Steam and Gmail, always ready to respond to emergencies.  Since nowadays that's almost a rarity, what with brilliant staff members ready and willing to respond in my place, I also have Dynmap open as well, in it's gorgeous 3D isometric mode.  It is in these rare instances, when I need to take a quick break from the brutal onslaught of paid obligations, that I scan our world, in part longing to be down there playing with you guys or building a road/bridge, but in larger part simply gasping in awe and admiration to all our crowning achievements.  Even if it's not a very large server, just the overwhelming amount of detail is mind-blowing.  We have many cities, towns and villages, all different and unique and worth the long trek to explore.  We have a sprawling road network interconnecting most of them, and ever-growing with each passing day, like web of a vast kingdom of spiders.  We have furnishings and gardens, dungeon quests and markets,... you can ride roller coasters or storm an Overworld nether fortress, or roleplay in a giant school, or simply relax with a finely brewed cup of coffee at a local SpookJams.  And above all, we have such a colorful and wonderful assortment of people there to make it all possible... and not just that, but make it worthwhile to visit, mingle, and help things grow bigger, better, more fun, more detailed, more brilliant and clever, and astonishingly alive!

I don't believe there are any words to describe how thankful, and proud, I am of all of you for helping us get to this milestone, and in such an incredible state!  I would not have imagined it early on, but I am forever-grateful that it became our reality!

I may not have much to offer for the anniversary this year due to time constraints (although some of my staff were gracious enough to throw a few server parties in my place), but I feel that a very important thing I can do for you all is to correct some wrongs I've been doing for the last two years....

==========

1) I have up until now refused to call you a "community".

While I'm a sucker for semantics, I feel nonetheless that you have all worked so hard and have done so much, and have looked after each other so well, that it would be nothing less than insulting to call it anything else than a "community".  Through your efforts, you HAVE built a community out of something meant to be long obsolete... how is it that we can still be stuck in Minecraft 1.6.4, ever surrounded by newer and more amazing games, and yet you still return here to spend time with your fellow players and friends, or outside on the forum or Steam?  I feel it is because when people care enough about each other to band together as an ever-interacting group, they begin to establish their own identity and culture, from which they can thrive no matter what the circumstances or how th environment is.  In essence, we created a community... and just like with ideas of reincarnation, the body (the server) may be corporeal and may not always last forever, but the spirit (the community) is in a way immortal, and can transcend in ways we never thought possible.

So I want to thank you all not just for making this the best server I have ever had the pleasure of playing in, but the best online community I have ever known.

2) I have either willingly or unwillingly used my server as a soapbox.

Now granted I have already done a lot in recent months to turn this around, but it begs repeating for those of you who have known me for a lot longer.  While I have benefited a lot from what I've learned during my time here -- and no day goes by when I'm thankful for having discovered [in the most unlikeliest of places] the real world salvation to some of my person ills -- I have had to come to accept that this will not work for everyone, as not everyone suffers from the same thing, or exactly the same way, or benefit from my own unique circumstances that allowed me to help myself.  I'm also not a doctor or parent or psychiatrist or even that much of a friend in the truest definition of the word, so really and truly I possess no reason at all for anyone to listen to me.  All I have is my rank as server owner, a fake position of authority, but still an "authority" nonetheless -- this may compel some people to either pay me lip-service to gain favor, or worse, it may cause other people to indeed be swayed or manipulated in ways that could potentially make a bad situation in their circumstance worse.

While I wholeheartedly believe in learning and asking questions, I admit that I would often find myself doing more "telling" than anything, and for that I'm sorry.  You all deserve a chance to find your own answers the way I did -- and while I'm always happy to share my knowledge and experience, remember that it's just one of many millions and billions of different viewpoints yet to be uncovered by you.

3) I have been trying too hard to find my replacement.

As I mentioned in my first-year address, I did not seek the position I have willingly, it was all just a string of accidents that turned me into a server owner.  And I have spent almost the entirety of the two years looking for someone to replace me -- someone I could entrust the safety of the server and it's players too.  Someone kind-hearted and crafty, but firm and courageous when it's necessary. Someone proactive and willing to learn, with superb communication coming from a drive towards extroversion. Someone who has no qualms with leading, has few personal issues to impair her ability to be on the server, and who had no problems inspiring others to help her.  And yes, I really REALLY wanted this new co-owner to be a girl for reasons only I can truly understand.

Alas, many would-be candidates over the years came and went, and I grew more and more miserable as disappointment after disappointment left me more and more "trapped" as the server owner.  Then the last candidate that I had, one so wonderful and honest in her appreciation of me and my efforts, and who I can now truly call a friend, was humbled by my offer but politely refused it.  It's thanks to her that I realized two things: a) I was setting impossible requirements in large part because, b) deep down inside I did not want to wish this hardship on others.  Despite what it seems, I am not in an enviable position, and being owner has taken its tolls on my time, money, and emotions in more ways than I could have expected.  To simply pass all this on to some other unsuspecting person and let her suffer with it, while I go off and vanish from the responsibility, ultimately struck me as just as cowardly as it sounds.

Eventually I came to the decision to abandon the search for my replacement, and to enjoy the remainder of my time here as the unwilling but happy owner of a server I once wanted to give away and now love with all that I have.  I will eventually step down to pursue other real life interests, but I won't expect a Cia 2.0 to run things for me -- if the server is to continue, it will be run as a team of caring people who can all more efficiently share the burden and the rewards.

And lastly,...

4) I have spent a lot of time looking for validation.

I have been told on at least a few occasions that I, either willingly or unwillingly, constantly seek praise and fulfillment from others.  Certainly it's not lost on me that when I log into the server I can quickly become the center of attention, and often times I've interrupted a good RP or building session as a result.  I talk a lot, sometimes too much, and the screen can very easily be drowned in a torrent of green, yellow and purple from all the name tags in there.  I insert myself in a lot of staff decision-making, and I'm always eager to have people ask (or challenge?) me with questions.  I constantly yearn for interaction, sometimes even to the point of being pushy.  And I won't lie, part of me enjoys having someone look up to me -- even though I have no shortage of this in real life, it's still a remarkable feeling that I look for.

But in my defense, praise has been one of the few drivers that keeps me going.  I cannot open myself to the community, I cannot discuss what I do on the server with real life friends and family, I cannot do much writing or drawing anymore, I cannot talk to people about my passions (usually food or health) as freely as I used to, I cannot offer to help as freely as I used to, I do not have the desire to play other games, I can't follow you all with all these fancy social media technolgies, and I don't even have as much interest in Minecraft as I used to.  Despite how things seemed during the past two years, it has been astonishingly-lonely for me most of the time, and of course under these circumstances even a little "thank you" makes it all feel worth it.

Have I probably gone a little overboard?  I'm sure I've had, and that's what I hope to fix on the road to our three-year anniversary.  But I will never stop loving you all for sharing your heartfelt appreciation, such as on my birthday when so many beautiful hand-made letters literally made me cry with grateful joy.  There is a reason I don't accept donations... an honest "thank you" is worth more to me than all of Notch's Microsoft money, that's just how I am both as this symbol you have grown to like and adore, and as a person.  If there is anything I definitely need to improve on, though, it's in thanking myself, as I never give myself credit for being unique, generous and special -- and perhaps if I did more searching within, I wouldn't have to rely so much on searching throughout.

==========

And that's about it, and I hope this rare bit of honesty was more enlightening than off-putting to at least the vast majority of readers. ^^

Now please excuse me if I do a little copy-pasta, but I really did like what I wrote last year in conclusion, and I feel it aged nicely, with a few updates...

Thank you very much to everyone who has helped make this anniversary possible, from my friend Cayfie who got me started in this, and my friend Hannah who has helped me get through this.  To UncleMion who wrote this wonderful mod, and to Gunia who intentionally-or-not helped bring most of us together back in the early days.  To all my dear staff, past and present, who have given their best, put up with my eccentricities, been my friends and supporters during times of need or plenty, protected the peace and security of our server, and who represent the very future of our server.  And of course, to all my dear players, who spread the word far and wide, who give us their hard-earned time and admiration, who showcase their gorgeous art and creations, and who help make us truly a unique and inviting place that I am happy and proud to visit every day.

May we all celebrate this occasion again at least one more time next year!

Let the Celebrations Begin!

Alo peoplez!

Two years ago on October 15th, 2013, our server was born... not as Big Sister, mind you, but as the "Sister Server" for Gunia's Gulliver Server.  For the uninitiated, you can read my old anniversary address here...

http://ciabatta-breadalot.blogspot.com/2014/10/one-year-server-anniversary-address.html

I expect to write a two-year anniversary address in the coming days (so long as I get a break from work), but for now I want to thank everyone for keeping us going strong for two years, the longest that a Gulliver Minecraft server of our size has been in operation!  I also want to officially mark the start of our Anniversary Weekend, a few days of server and forum festivities stretching from Thursday, October 15th to Sunday, October 18th!  I look forward to seeing how we wish our dear server a happy birthday!

Cheers!

Congratulations Moderator Hannah

Hello all!

It is my pleasure to congratulate Hannah for her promotion to the rank of server Moderator after her remarkably-successful and gloriously-fun term as server Deputy and Commissioner!

Hannah needs no introduction for many of you... once a shy girl barely able to speak, she now constantly communicates, mingles and engages with so many of you, including myself. Once plagued with an array of insecurities about her own abilities, now she has no qualms with stretching beyond her ever-expanding comfort zones. Once paralyzed with fear even to ask a simple question, now she regularly delegates or gets the information she needs to finish a task. Once interested in nothing more than to be small, invisible and inconsequential, now she makes her presence known and trusted. Once plagued by a variety of ailments, she eventually saved herself through the power of her own remarkable listening, as well as a bravery she still rarely acknowledges she has. And above all else, she had the strength of character and responsibility to withhold from this advancement for some time now, until she herself felt ready and capable to live up to new expectations.

In short, I can't help but feel very proud of Hannah, and I hope she is or will be just as proud of her accomplishments. More than a loyal and trusting staff member, Hannah is a pupil, colleague and now a dear friend who will do what it takes to keep us safe, happy and appreciated.

I hereby proudly request that Hannah be offered the opportunity to become a Moderator on our server, and join the elite cadre of staff members entrusted with unfettered access to the very heart and soul of the server. Thank you very much!

Hannah was voted in through a parliamentary-style staff election featuring a respectable 82% voter turnout, with 14 votes in favor and three abstains due to unavailability!

I want to thank all staff who participated in giving Hannah such an enthusiastic vote of confidence, as well as all players who have helped make her the remarkable staff member she is today!

Welcome Moderator Spookie!!!

Hello all!

It is my pleasure to congratulate Spookie for his promotion to the rank of server Moderator after his very successful and productive term as server Deputy and Commissioner!

Spookster, or Spookie as we affectionately call him, is all but a household name on the server. Having embraced all the special tools and technologies availabe to a Commissioner, such as World Control and NBTEdit, has allowed him to truly flourish as a creative mind and enhancer of the player experience. Many an adventurous player has gushed over the swash-buckling adventures of his dungeon quests, which improves and far surpasses anything I could have ever accomplished in my own prototype quest. He is an avid renovator and continues his quest with improving and repurposing neglected or abandoned sites on the server. And most of all, he's been a good friend to many, a stalwart defender of the server, an excellent application writer, and a loyal, patient and dedicated staff member; that he associates himself with a dog is only fitting as dogs are likewise intelligent, loving and loyal companions. Whatever indiscretions he may have committed in the past in his long journey and evolution to this point have all been forgotten and forgiven as he has proved his worthiness of our respect and admiration time and time again.

I hereby proudly propose that Spookie be offered the opportunity to be a Moderator on our server, and join the elite cadre of staff members entrusted with unfettered access to the very heart and soul of the server. Thank you.

Spookie was voted in through a parliamentary-style staff election featuring a whopping 94% voter turnout, with 15 votes in favor and one abstain due to unavailability!

I want to thank all staff who participated in giving Spookie such an enthusiastic vote of confidence, as well as all players who have showered him with much deserved praise and camaraderie!

Livin' La Vida Loca

Hello all!

Well TerraFormaCraft ended up being a roaring success... for about a week and a half. After which interested thinned out once it became apparent that a) clay was very hard to get, b) metallurgy is HARD (>v<), c) the extra food is more tedious than fun, d) THOSE DAMN SPIDERS!!, and e) the entire world looks the same.  I think that really wasn't what I was expecting, so let's not do that again... XD

Anyway, perhaps it's time to return to our roots?  After all, we now have lots of new players who've never known about last year's flavors, and it's not right for them to miss out on some old fun.  So this month, we're reviving a bit of the Stayin' Alive flavor from April 2014... ^^

http://ciabatta-breadalot.blogspot.com/2014/05/stayin-alive.html

We'll see the return of fan-favorite Minecraft Comes Alive, as well as my personal favorite of Mo' Creatures (yay, elephants!); a new and improved Mo' Villages also makes a return, serving as a great compliment to MCA.  CustomNPCs couldn't make it this time since it really isn't enjoyable for non-opped players -- sorry ol' friend, maybe next time. ^^

But NEW to this month's flavor are the additions of the fun Morph mod so you can transform into your favorite mob or animal (YAY! ELEPHANTS!!), Mr. Cray's Furniture Mod (to make MCA more "Sims"-like), and a new exciting addition to Little Brother... the Chocolate Quest mod (for dungeon-exploring, volcano-sieging, swash-buckling adventure)!!! I don't even think I can post a picture of chocolate in such an action-packed light, but... I'll try... XD

Well not quite the same, but that's still a pretty fun movie to watch. >v<

So anyway, I'm pleased to officially announce a whole collection of fun mods for the July Flavor of Little Brother!

Here are the details of this month's flavor:
  • This is using Minecraft 1.7.10, and Forge 10.13.2.1291.
  • We will have a collection of various mods in this release, specifically: Minecraft Comes Alive, Mo' Creatures, Mo' Villages, Morph Mod, Cray's Furniture mod and Chocolate Quest.
  • The map is vanilla-generated.
  • Flammole and InvisibleDragon continue to be the permanent moderators.
  • HannahShy will assume the role of Monthly Moderator for this month.
  • Difficulty is set to "Hard Mode" to see some of the finer Mo' Creatures critters.  :)
  • A Dynmap is employed with this flavor, although it is using an Alpha build so block fidelity may not be perfect.

For Installation:
  1. Create a new Little Brother profile in your launcher and have it set to Minecraft 1.7.10 -- run the game at least once to download the necessary Version files.
  2. Download Forge 10.13.2.1291 for Minecraft v1.7.10 and run the installer.
  3. Back in the Little Brother profile, set the Game Directory to a new folder of your choice and the Use Version to the new Forge for 1.7.10, and run the game.  This will allow game files (including the /mods folder) for this Little Brother profile to be created in a separate folder, thus eliminating the risk of overwriting your standard Big Sister files in the main Minecraft directory.
  4. Download Minecraft Comes Alive [MCA] 5.0.6 and RadixCore 2.0.2 for Minecraft 1.7.10:
    http://www.radix-shock.com/mca--download.html
  5. Download Mo Creatures v6.3.1 and Custom MobSpawner 3.3.0 for Minecraft 1.7.10:
    http://mocreatures.org/downloads
  6. Download Mo Villages v1.3.1 for Minecraft 1.7.10:
    http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/2525968-forge-172-164-sspsmp-mo-villages-villages-in-more-biomes/
  7. Download Morph Beta v0.9.1 and iChunUtil v4.2.2 for Minecraft 1.7.10:
    http://ichun.us/mods/morph/#
    http://ichun.us/mods/ichunutil/
  8. Download Mr. Crayfish's Furniture Mod v3.4.7 for Minecraft 1.7.10:
    http://www.minecraftforum.net/forums/mapping-and-modding/minecraft-mods/1282349-mrcrayfishs-furniture-mod-v3-4-7-the-kitchen
  9. Download Chocolate Quest 1.0 for Minecraft 1.7.10:
    http://chocolatequest.wikia.com/wiki/Chocolate_Quest_Mod_Installation
  10. Copy the above mod to your /mods folder inside the custom folder you specified in the Little Brother profile's Game Directory.
  11. Load the game using the Little Brother profile, add littlebrother.mcserver.ws into your Multiplayer list, and enjoy!

And that's it!

It might be a little complicated installing so many mods, but rest assured that adventure and digital socialization and morphing into bunnies awaits!!!  So go nuts!  XD

Welcome Commissioner Hannah!!!

Hello all!

I'm proud to announce that Hannah has been promoted to the rank of Commissioner, and after completing a superb run as one of our finest Deputies!

There is an old saying about not judging a book by its cover, and Hannah I feel exemplifies this immensely. When I first met her she seemed like so many of the applicants at the time... aloof, timid, unfocused and needy, with a subpar whitelist application, and a knack for attracting unwanted attention. We even had one or two altercations during the first few weeks she was there, and she was often missing for huge swathes of time, so there was no indication whatsoever that she would have amounted to anything. Thankfully, I was wrong, or rather vindicated in my belief that good communication can solve many problems, and in her case Hannah ended up being a wonderful communicator. Even when she did not have to, she still kept in contact with me, still tried her best to be a model player, and did her utmost to follow my advice for self-help whenever possible.

And that I feel is where Hannah's remarkable strength lies... she is a phenomenal listener. It was through her willingness to listen, and apply the knowledge she learned to better herself, that she was able to initiate a remarkable transformation over the past year, more than could be explained by natural growth and maturity. She has healed herself of various preconditions, and has grown less anxious, more talkative, more self-confident and more outgoing. She has grown even more communicative and assertive than ever before, to the point where friends and family alike no longer recognize her (and for all the good reasons!). These days I feel I can count on her for everything from a quick construction favour on the server, to a though-provoking and fulfilling conversation about any matter of topic. Where once she deemed herself incapable of ever becoming even a Deputy rank, she surprised even herself when she earned that qualification far head of schedule. And as a Deputy, she's done a stellar job and is among the ranks of one of the most proactive staff members I've ever known, both publicly and privately in the staff section. It's thanks to her boundless determination and incredible support that I have been able to restructure my project allocations and staff perks, improving efficiencies and making it more rewarding than ever to assist with server management.

Truly, she has been a major catalyst for change, as well as an excellent friend to many of us that have given her the chance to shine; and it's due to her impressive accomplishments that I was overjoyed to have her as part of my team. Now that she's outshined even a Deputy's position, and proved herself to be an individual trustworthy of greater powers, I feel it's only fitting to uncap her potential even further by nominating her for a Commissioner position. May her new privileges and responsibilities allow her to explore new venues for personal growth, as well as mark a new phase of growth for our server and its community!

Hannah was voted in through a parliamentary-style staff election featuring an 81% voter turnout, with 12 votes in favor, 1 legitimate abstain, and three abstains due to unavailability.

I want to thank everyone who directly or indirectly helped Hannah grow over the year she's been on this server. Thanks to you, she loves this server very much, enough to give so much of her time and effort to keep it awesome.  ^^
And of course, I want to thank Hannah personally for never giving up, for being a great listener, and for ultimately choosing to believe in herself with great success!
You did it! And now it's time to DREAM BIGGER!

Half-Way Point

Alo everyone,

The other day I was thinking back to the obituary to Gunia's Gulliver Server I wrote back last year...

http://ciabatta-breadalot.blogspot.com/2014/05/rip-gunias-server-2013-2014.html

I meant to write this two weeks ago (on the 28th of May), but too many life and server obligations got in the way, so consider this a belated remembrance of our parent server that a new and growing generation of players would not have had the fortune of experiencing for themselves.

It also got me thinking of how long we've been in operation.  At the time of that writing, Gunia's had been in operation for almost 18 months, or a 1.5 years, easily besting out competing Gulliver servers at that time.  In contrast we were not even at our full-year anniversary.

But as of this writing we are now nearly going on 20 months of operation, so officially (as of some time in April), we have matched and surpassed the length of service of our parent server!  And it came and went just like that with little fanfare or realization, probably because we're so used to things running according to plan, or because time simply flies when we're having fun...

Either way, I am very thankful to all of you who have helped make this server... a simple backup server for Gunia's Gulliver Server... the great and enduring success it has been in all the 20 months of its existence! Given how many challenges it has endured during its inception and all the many times it's integrity has been threatened by agents of fear and vengeance, it is truly miraculous to see all of you work together to keep it strong, proud and vibrant, to have it surpass all expectations, and to form from it a kind of community that spreads farther and wider than the confines of a simple Minecraft server.  I truly can't thank you all enough for that!

Now having outlasted any major Gulliver Server before us, and still remaining among only a few other Gulliver servers left (given so many communities have moved on to later versions of Minecraft), where do we go from here?  Clearly we're ready and willing to transition to a later version of Minecraft, Mion permitting, but do we expect to live on and keep this server in operation for all eternity?

I think not, and it wouldn't be healthy enough for us to spend so many of our best years tied to a single digital pastime . The ultimate unwritten goal of the Big Sister Gulliver server is to remain in operation for a minimum length of three years, of which we're now past the half-way point.  After the three years are up, I think it will become time for a server-wide consensus on what to do next for Big Sister (and consequently, Little Brother).  Either we extend the mandate for another year, at which point Cay and I would pass the batons on to newer, younger, and more capable owners.  Or we agree to quit while we're ahead and close the server gracefully after it's mandate is over, after which we make the server map, tools and configuration files public, and allow any interested players to resurrect their own version of Big Sister on their own if they so choose.

The first discussion on extending the mandate will begin on December 15th, 2016. We still have plenty of time to think about this, but two things are certain:

1) We want to fully respect people's needs to move on with things, including highly-successful game servers, and we also want to respect the desire for proper closure as opposed to quick and traumatic terminations.

2) We have no intention to destroy anyone's work here -- regardless of what happens, whether the mandate is extended or not, you will all eventually have full and public access to the game map, and thus can take your creations with you to preserve and cherish forever.

Having the knowledge of our server's finality, as well as our goal to preserve everyone's work, will hopefully instill a comforting sense of place and being, and allow you to better enjoy and appreciate your time here as you decide whether this is something you will want to keep doing for many more years to come.  It may be all fun and games now, but sooner or later you'll have more school responsibilities, college, work life, a loving relationship, a family, and a whole dizzying number of ways life can happen.  Our goal is to entertain you while you wait for those inevitablities, train you for those inevitabilities, and ultimately not get in your way as you finally face those inevitabilities. And if you agree that this is the most responsible thing for us to do, then I'm sure you will help us make the best decision possible on December 31st, 2016 when our voting ends

Thank you!

Terra Forming!

Hello all!

Well Tech World 2 ended up being a big flop, and if anything I feel that we are starting to feel a bit of FTB burnout... despite their ease of installation, each modpack has JUST TOO MANY MODS... enough to saturate the mind and, ironically, stifle creativity -- a true case of being jack of all trades and master of none.  It's about time we took a break from these crazy modpacks and focused on something a little more unitary and measured...

Something like... a full-conversion survival mod. ^^

Enter TerraFirmaCraft!  Like Better Than Wolves before it, it strives to overhaul the entire game mechanics of Minecraft, introducing different kinds of realistic crafting methods, harvesting methods, seasons, breeding, temperature considerations, pottery and smelting, enough to make the game realistic and challenging, but creative and rewarding!  It truly makes this like a whole new game!

So I'm pleased to officially announce TerraFirmaCraft as our May Flavor for Little Brother!

Here are the details of this month's flavor:
  • This is using Minecraft 1.7.10, and Forge 10.13.2.1291.
  • TerraFirmaCraft will be the sole featured mod -- however, it is really all we need, considering how many new blocks and items it introduces into the game (including some amazing new food items, yum!).
  • The map is generated based on the native "TFC" world generation.
  • Flammole and InvisibleDragon continue to be the permanent moderators.  Coco will continue to be our Monthly Moderator for this month.
  • Difficulty is set to "Normal Mode" since the mod is already hard-enough.

  4. Download TerraFirmaCraft Beta 0.79.18.673 for Minecraft 1.7.10:
    http://terrafirmacraft.com/download.html
  5. Copy the above mod to your /mods folder inside the custom folder you specified in the Little Brother profile's Game Directory.
  6. Load the game using the Little Brother profile, add littlebrother.mcserver.ws into your Multiplayer list, and enjoy!

And that's it!

Good luck playing Survival Mode the way it SHOULD be!

And although I don't have any inspirational videos dealing with terra firmaness... uh... here's one that's kinda cool... and kinda deals with... uh... new.... world... ness....... yeah.... XD

HAPPY CAY DAY 2015!!!

ALO EVERYONE!!!
And in particular, our Dear Leader and Grand Owner, Cayfie, without whom this server and everything that has made it great wouldn't be possible!

Not much has changed since last year and you can pretty much rinse and repeat the speech I did back in Cay Day 2014...

http://ciabatta-breadalot.blogspot.com/2014/05/happy-cay-day-2014.html

And while Cay is still not around as much as we'd like, make no mistake she is here, she loves all of us and all that we've done, and she will continue to help make this the best server we possibly can!

Here's to wishing our dear Cay another Happy Birthday, with many many more to come!  And here's to another year of awesomeness together!  ^^

And to repeat the tradition of birthday songs she can't understand, here's one of my favourites... ^^

Don't forget that there are free Cay Heads, cake and fireworks at CAY'S, the official Cay Day department store!!!

ENJOY!! And please post your birthday messages at our official Cay Day 2015 forum thread!!  ^^

Drama Llama Manifesto - A Roadmap for the Lolz

Hello all!

Well, I'm bored.

The server is operating so well and everything is so nice and cheery and perfect, that it leaves me wtih nothing to do or rant or gripe about! Nothing ever happens and there's too much communication, appreciation, intelligence, obedience, dedication, people getting on with their lives, and everyone using the resources of this server and it's forum for their own personal self-empowerment! I miss the days of whining, stealing, griefing, bawling, acting fresh with staff, begging for op, performing questionable roleplay, and accepting any random hooligans who can write a barely-legible whitelist app.  Those were the days... and now they're but a distant memory in this a time of dull prosperity.

I feel that as a Minecraft server we have lost our way... :(

But no longer! XD

It's time to write a NEW Manifesto, one that will no doubt cast aside all the stifling stagnant stability and replace it with glorious chaos, the likes of which would put us closer in line with your average Minecraft Server!  Rejoice as we tear apart everything and begin life anew with the following roadmap to successful server entropy...!

====================

1) First, I have to personally rollback ALL my health gains so I can get back to my former sickly, depressive, forgetful, dramatic, inefficient, over-medicated self!  After all, how can I expect others to follow my lead if I can't be a proper nervous wreck?  XD

*gobs an entire bag of whole wheat flour, flavored by a bowl of sugar, and chased down with a gallon of soybean oil*
*dies a little on the inside*

2) After I'm sufficiently messed up, the next order of business is to DELETE THE ENTIRE WORLD MAP!!  Screw everyone's hardwork and blood-sweat-tears... the map is now so EWWW-ugly and it offends my own personal sensibilities just seeing the same boring sight everyday!  Everyone will be far better off starting from scratch -- I heard that from another crazy server owner!  ^^

3) Of course, if we're to become an average server owner, we HAVE to care about player count over everything!  So I will revise the application to reflect this instead:

  • QUESTION 1: IGN?
  • QUESTION 2: Do you like cheese?

And that's it!  Now we will have TONS of high-quality, law-abiding players who will spread the world and bring about MORE high-quality, law-abiding players that will form a wonderful community where griefing, stealing, bullying, public indecency, Skype-flashing and harassment will in no way happen!  You can trust the Internet! XD

4) Hmmm... come to think about it, how on Earth can we attract more scum... er, high-quality, law-abiding players,... if we only have 40 players slots?  I guess that means we're UPGRADING!!  I'm going to take the lead of another famous Gulliver server owner and buy THE BEST DARN DEDICATED SERVER THERE IS!! It'll only be $600 a month, I'm sure my meager salary can cover that.  XD

5) And if it doesn't, I can probably ask you guys for donations in exchange for frivolous gameplay features that should have been free in the first place. What's that? It's not allowed in the EULA anymore!?  Well then, I guess I'll just send Notch an angry tweet just to run my mouth, and hope it doesn't make him angry enough to sell the company to the Devil just to spite whiny servers owners like me. ^^

6) OH SONUVA--!!! http://www.wsj.com/articles/microsoft-agrees-to-acquire-creator-of-minecraft-1410786190

7) Well I guess to support this unsustainable growth on a smaller budget, I'll have to run the server from home, using my own crummy computer and bad internet connection.  I'm sure no one will mind the constant lag, or the two weeks the server can go down unannounced just because I'm in some dark mood.  When I reopen, you'll all be HAPPY to crawl back in!! XD

8) Oh but that pesky forum offers too much communication and is making players and staff think... er, that means they may organize their own Gulliver server because they may get the weird idea that I suck at being a server owner!  No way!  FORUM DELETED!!! STAY IN THE DARK, YOU NOOBS! XD

9) Little Brother? Whazzat?  ANOTHER SERVER?!! AND PLAYERS VOTE FOR ITS CONTENT?!!! Hell NAW I'm letting free expression on MY server!  BEGONE DEMOCRACY!!  *delete* You vill play vat I tell you to play, svine!

9) Er, the staff keep nagging me with emails, PMs and Steam messages to, like, do my job... Like, OMG! Pfft!  Can't they see I'm busy being broody and emo and ironic and roleplaying about vampires?!  Insta-fire all of them!!

10)  Well, except for ShadowSnail, I still need someone to dump all responsibilities on.  But he won't get FTP access, so he's gotta make do with what's left. XD

11) Hmmm, well now the players are clamoring for protection from griefers.  I guess I need to carefully evaluate and assess new moderators, but... meh, THATS TOO MUCH WOOOOOOOOOOORK!  Imma institute Moderator Applications so that anyone can apply and woo me with how loud and obnoxious they can be in order to win the Moderator spot.

12) Well I got two applications, one from Mr. XxWefZSpeedCykSupDiggMan101xX and the other from KentuckyFriedCraft1.  Mr. XxWefZSpeedCykSupDiggMan101xX is a moron, has been caught stealing, griefing and raging on other players, is despised by all, is overly-dramatic and whiny, always threatens me with revolutions if I don't do what he says, has the building skills of a turnip, CannotBeUnderstoodCauseHeTalksLikeThis, types out his own flatulence, and only promises to behave himself if he has Creative Mode.  KentuckyFriedCraft1, meanwhile, has been on the server since forever, is calm, patient, dedicated, and well-loved and respected by all players, is an excellent builder, a great writer, always follows the rules, and has helped make the server the best it can be. So of course, the choice is obvious....

13) Mr. XxWefZSpeedCykSupDiggMan101xX FOR BEST MODERATOR!!!

14) Also KentuckyFriedCraft1 is best chicken! ^^

15) OMGAWD SUCH WHINING!!! All the players are up in arms simply because Mr. XxWefZSpeedCykSupDiggMan101xX leveled three cities and 150 player houses to build a shady Five Night at Freddy's pixelart!  Oh BOOHOO! why are people such DRAMA QUEENS?!  Well,.. I simply reset the entire world map again and gave Mr. XxWefZSpeedCykSupDiggMan101xX a stern talking to... hopefully he's learned his lesson and people will soon appreciate his potential!

16) Imma dissapoint! KentuckyFriedCraft1 failed to replant a carrot simply because she had to go do homework!  Keh! Such disrespect to everything that is good and decent on this server!  INSTA-BAN-HAMMER!!!!!!  XO

17) I HAZ DA BOREDZ!!!  MANDATORY RPS FOR ALL!!! Anyone caught talking normally without encapsulating their text in brackets ("[like dis!]") well be BANNED!!  If everyone is not roleplaying within a roleplay within a roleplay (RPception), ta hell with them!  XD

18) Le sigh!! People are such ingrates! Just because I don't talk to anyone [unless it's for RPs], never fix the epic lag issue, leave whitelist applications piling on for months, never install security mods like Forge Essentials, don't have a proper Spawn area, reset my world seemingly every two weeks and never put the old worlds up for download, heckle people for donations, enlist horrible human beings as moderators just because they're fun to RP with, don't have a proper forum in which to help players communicate ideas or interact outside the server, go on bipolar mood rages, treat everyone like crap, constantly threaten to close the server down if I don't get my way, never take responsibility for anything, and turn off the server for days/weeks/months without any forewarning just 'cause I feel like it... DOESN"T GIVE THEM THE RIGHT TO BE SO MEEEEEEEEEEEEEEAN TO ME!!!! XD

19) EVERYONE SUCKZ!!!!  ITS MY SERVER!!! I OWN IT!!! AND NO ONE CAN TELL ME WHAT TO DO!!!!!!  EVERYONE IS HERE ONLY BECAUSE OF ME!!!  ME!!! MEEEE!!!!  EVERYONE OWES ME RESPECT!!!!!!!  SO LOVE MEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!

20) *INSERT RANDOM MELODRAMA RANT HERE*

21) I HATEZ EVERYTHING!!!!!!!!!!!  RAGE QUIT!!!!!!  >v<

22) *closes down server FOR-EH-VERRRRRRRR!*

23) HAHAHAHA!! Kayfie and that new girl Giardiniera went off and opened a new server to take in all the former players, and also set up a whole communication network, player forums, Dynmap, a never-changing world, a sophisticated whitelisting process and even a blog!  PFF! What LOSERS!  I bet that Giardiniera girl is gonna turn out to be some major drama llama pickle nazi!  Their dinky little server will crash and burn within a month! XD

====================

So there you have it!  A perfect plan for becoming an average Minecraft Server!

The future is looking brighter already! XD

GULLIVER UPDATED TO BETA 1.7.3!!!!

Woohoo!!  Our Ark efforts have not been in vain!  Gulliver is now available for Minecraft Beta 1.7.3!!!  It's quite a shock indeed! Surely Christmas came early this year!  XD

And I quickly cobbled together an installation guide to go with it!  Please check it out and immerse yourself in the wonderful sights and sounds of this new release!  :D

Congratulations, Commissioner Lomgren!

Hello all!

I'm proud to announce that Lomgren has been promoted to the rank of Commissioner, and not a moment too soon if I may add!

Although he is one of our oldest players, there was no guarantee that Lomgren would have been an exceptional and proactive player; we had many examples of older adult players who came, made fools of themselves, and left us doubting if they were truly as old as they claimed to be. But no such doubt exists with Lom... he is the real deal, and he has proven himself to be smart, mature, honest, sincere, capable, receptive and patient since as early as his application.

As a new player, Lom took the time to absorb every facet of our server, and was instrumental in jump-starting a long-stalled biome import program... he then, as a player, proceeded to construct a very elaborate floating city and a shockingly-expansive road system.  During that time he was helpful and courteous to all staff and players, while still remaining curious and receptive to new ideas -- even today, he continues to ask some of the best questions.  He was offered a Deputy position early on, and like any good would-be Deputy he declined the position until he felt ready; and when he inevitably accepted, he has graced the server with his boundless resolve, exceptional technical expertise, professional-level application reviews, and good-nature.  Even when faced with the prospect of becoming a Commissioner, he did not jump on the opportunity, preferring instead to humbly further his experience as a Deputy, and the unique and challenging combination of freedom and responsibility that it offered.  Ever thoughtful and law-abiding, he wanted to make sure that he was ready in body and spirit to become the best Commissioner possible for us.

Now he feels himself ready for a new opportunity, and has graciously accepted a Commissioner position after far-exceeding our expectations during his months of service as Deputy. I feel Lom has proven himself to be an individual who can be entrusted with the greater Commissioner powers, as well as our respect and admiration. May his new privileges and responsibilities empower him to gift his full potential to all the players and staff on this server.

Lomgren was voted in through a parliamentary-style staff election featuring a 75% voter turnout, with 11 votes in favor and four abstains due to unavailability.

I want to thank everyone who directly or indirectly helped Lom enjoy his time here on the server, and help him become the person he is today.

And of course I want to thank Lom himself for his remarkable dedication, both before, now and hopefully for a long time to come!

Congratulations, Moderator Cordelia!!!

Hello all!

It is my pride and privilege to announce that Cordelia (Coco) has been promoted to the prestigious rank of Moderator, a move long in the making!

Cordelia is more than just the clever, skilled, intelligent, no-nonsense, bunny-loving master builder that we know and adore. She is more than the person who near-singlehandedly built one of the largest and most elaborate 8x mansions as a normal player, and who then founded Harendelle, one of the largest and most beautiful cities on the server. She is more than just the person who built the second-largest structure on the server, only to completely destroy it to start-over for the sake of artistic integrity. She is more than just the person who writes application reviews with academic precision, or who clamps down on lunacy and indecency on the server fearlessly and efficiently. She is more than just the person who builds lovely homes for her fellow players, wonderous transportation networks to link everyone together, and lush gardens to pretty up a landscape. She is more than just a friendly colleague of mine who's opinions and input I value; one who overcame her initial shyness and the varous attempts at Swarming by unruly players, to grow into a stronger, more outspoken, more communicative individual. Indeed, even Cordelia herself knows she is more than all of this, if not she wouldn't constantly seek to challenge herself, and push the envelope of possibility to bring about good things for all of us, including herself.

In fact, she is the thing that legends are made of, and it's my privilege to request that you offer Cordelia the opportunity to be a Moderator on our server, so she can expand her horizons of what is possible, and truly share with us all the commitment, devotion, inspiration and unbridled potential she has generously offered us for all these months we've known her.

Cordelia was voted in through a parliamentary-style staff election featuring an 83% voter turnout, with 10 votes in favor and two abstains.

I want to thank everyone who directly or indirectly helped Cordelia achieve such a remarkable milestone!
We truly wouldn't be where we are now without her!

Welcome Commissioner Mimi!

Hello all!

It is my pleasure to announce that Mimi (Elmira_) has been promoted to the rank of server Commissioner, after a very successful run as a calm, collective and helpful Deputy.

Mimi is the embodiment of soft-power, although it wasn't always obvious at first. Small, quiet, unassuming and shy, and with an equally-humbling RL description, it was easy to assume at first that she would be a bit of a pushover. Surely her doe-eyed demeanor meant that she was someone completely allergic to the word "no", incapable of thinking for herself, easy to coerce, mute beyond a simple "hi" and "ok", and with loose-enough lips to sink our mightiest ships. True, she shortly after proved herself to be a wonderfully-dedicated builder, and a very helpful and sweet person, but she still lacked that bite needed to take on the very tough job of overseeing the forum and its many applicants, and certainly communication, one of the cornerstones of our success, seemed all but non-existent, impossible to extract out of her without the use of a crowbar. In short, it was a stretch to call her deputy material.

But she resolutely kept on the path; and much like the proverbial tortoise racing against the hare, she slowly and steadily matured over time, becoming a memorable and iconic player to our server despite the fact that she often did little more than work on her town. It's the kind of unwavering devotion and commitment to her own beliefs that steadily whispered, then spoke, then yelled her presence to us; in fact, her will was so strong that she refused several initial attempts to become a Deputy, appreciating instead the simpler pleasures that our server life had to offer. That too gradually changed over time, as she slowly and steadily considered our offer, and one day finally accepted with that simple and subdued glee she is known for.

And thus her growth continued, at first being a relatively quiet Deputy, unsure of herself and her responsibilities, and dragged around by me like a rag doll in the hopes of setting her up to do road construction. She was met with challenges she was not prepared for, projects she could not possibly accomplish, and questions she was not prepared to ask -- a true test to see if there was anything vibrant under that shell. And two things happened as a result... one, and most predictably, she would never shy from any challenge. She would always strive to do her best, and often times succeed above and beyond expectations, such as when writing her whitelist reviews. And two, and most unpredictably, when it seemed like she could not do something or she needed help... she would ask for it, or she would kindly accept the help. She would actually talk, communicate via Steam without being asked first, offer her services rather than simply waiting around to be told what to do, offer valuable insight and opinions when asked for them (having amassed some great knowledge about bridges).

And so she would quietly and happily work along side her fellow staff members and I, getting massive road projects finished in little or no time, or maintaining the Player Registry knowing that I would fully forget to update it. She would offer tours to novices when no one was around, or mingle with players and their side projects, a far cry from the quiet recluse she appeared at first. She also refused the commissioner role on numerous occasions, voluntarily considering herself unprepared for the extra responsibility -- a true sign of a very deep honesty that should be revered. And now that the time has come for her to feel truly self-confident about accepting this position, I look forward to seeing in how many more ways she can surprise me with her humble soft-power. It goes without saying that you don't have to be loud to be strong, and I feel that Mimi has proven herself to be an individual who can be entrusted with the greater Commissioner powers, as well as our respect and admiration.

Mimi was voted in through a parliamentary-style staff election featuring an admirable 85% voter turnout, with 12 votes in favor and two abstains.

I want to thank everyone who participated for giving Mimi a well-deserved vote of confidence!
