Viva la RevoluciĆ³n! [de Little Brother]

Hello peoplez,  ^^

Due to dismally-low participation, Little Brother is in the process of going through a little coup d'etat revolution and staff change, and conveniently just before next month's flavor.  :)

The Little Brother Committee will be disbanded and in its place we will have a permanent staff of four moderators, 3 permanent, one monthly.

The three permanent moderators will be:

  • AudreyAwesome
  • InvisibleDragon
  • Lizeli9

The fourth spot will be the traditional monthly moderator spot that Veterans and over can still campaign to get into.  If no person campaigns for this position, then "Squirrel" will assume this spot.  ;)

As for actual flavor selection, people can still post ideas and we will have polls to gauge public opinion. However, the Little Brother staff will make the final selection and reserve the right to alter or replace the mod flavor during the course of the month.  If no mod flavor is chosen, they will make the mod flavor selection themselves.

And that's all, this should help remove a lot of uncertainty and expedite the process of selecting the mod flavors so I personally have more time to implement and test prior to deployment, since the February deployment was a complete and utter fracas for me.  ;)

Server Spotlight: Zardenmuiden

CZAR-DEHN-MOOEY-DEHN
^ My bad attempt at pronouncing it  ^^;

Anyway, welcome everyone!

In this week's server spotlight, I'd like to showcase a new town that sprung up seemingly out of nowhere,... and very close to Spawnington too, so how we managed to miss it all this time is beyond me.  After the transit hub was finished, our fellow resident Spookster asked to have a teleport to his newly-minted town, and upon seeing it for the first time, I was pleasantly surprised to see something that was FAR from a quick-and-dirty hamlet.  Indeed, he went through the trouble to set up a fairly-large, well-lit, well-detailed, well-tidied and well-protected desert town, complete with a cactus perimeter wall and fortified city gates.  And although he was a bit indecisive on the name, it seems "Zardenmuiden" is here to stay!  :D

Now Spook does have his own picture gallery which you're more than welcome to review and explore on your own if you're willing...

...But this is a brief overview from my own perspective, as a visitor to this lovely desert town about a week later.  :)

The journey starts where it usually does, at the Spawnington Transit Hub.  Granted the town is so very close to Spawnington, it begs the question why we would even need a teleporter for it -- if you were 1X or over.  Clearly our resident tinies will be overjoyed to know that there is a quick and safe way to access this new town, and so the teleporter is made mostly for them.  That, and of course because we want a teleporter for EVERY town.  :)

Upon arriving there telemagically, you won't just land on some dirt patch with a Spawnington Express sign nearby.  No sir!  You get a lovely pumpkin telegrid in the main town square, flanked by a few public buildings and the official municipal well.  The change in climate is immediately, as your senses are immediately tickled by a gentle but roasting desert wind complimented by bright sunny skies and no rain.

The town is designed with renters in mind (notwithstanding there is more housing than there are server players), so a lot of the buildings populating the area are empty and for rent, pending the eager soul who wants to live the quiet desert life.  This house in the picture below even has a stable for normal sized-horses, giant ones need not apply).

And in case you thought no one lived here, think again!  Hurray for Trade Shoppes!  :D

Legend has it that the town was built around an ancient temple, partially unearthed and converted to the town hall.  So next time you find a desert temple, remember kids... rather than loot and pillage it, why not consider making it into your own personal local government building?  :D

You would think such a small town would lack in tourist attractions, but again you'd be surprised. Aside from the sky-high cactus, you also get the burning fountain, which stands as a prominent feature in this city and defies most laws of thermodyphysics.  Gaze in awe at its magnificence, and be sure to toss a coin for a wish too.

and to protect them all, as I mentioned earlier, the legendary cactus wall.  Impervious to everything but the most persistent 3x mobs.  Dont expect the gates to be 2x-friendly, though... might add that into the suggestion box, given I'm often 2x myself  :P

Also, if anyone is interested in building staggered gravel roads from here to Spawnington, please go ahead and do it!  There is a substantial cheese reward for the completed job, and it's not far so that's easy money :)

And there you have it!  A lovely little desert paradise only minutes away from our Spawnington! Give it a visit!  Give it two visits!  Buy a house!  Enjoy the sun! Zardenmuiden welcomes you!

And now for a bit of desert festival music to set the mood :)

A Time to Celebrate!

Alo everyone!!

Thanks to a successful staff nomination and voting process, it is my pleasure to announce that we have selected our very first Commissioners for the Big Sister server:
  • AudreyAwesome
  • invisibledragon
  • Skeletor1991

These individuals will help us in protecting the peace and prosperity of our server through the moderator-like powers granted to them.  It's thanks to Forge Essentials that this was possible, and I'm looking forward to seeing what amazing things can come from this broad sharing of responsibilities.

Congratulations, and welcome aboard!

Essential Reading!

Alo everyone!

Real quick as I'm very tired from the less-than-smooth rollout, but we do have Forge Essentials in place now on the server, and it is kinda/sorta behaving as expected. For the most part.

But like with any new thing, there is bound to be some bugs.  For instance, /spawn dumps you to an area outside the Spawnington walls, and the command to reset the spawn to a better location doesn't quite work.  And our team colors don't work anymore, but can be replaced with colored nicknames... which also don't seem to work for everyone.  ugh... XDD

But these are just minor growing pains.... and the work is actually not finished on these either. Additional updates are forthcoming, and in the meantime we can reap the real rewards.  :D

If you do find any other issues or bugs, though, please post them at our forum.  And as always, many thanks to Tarig for helping to make this possible with his 1.6.x porting of Forge Essentials!  :)

Server Spotlight - Glasgrow

Alo everyone!!

Today we're going to try something different; we're going to start a series where we will showcase creations that are brought to my attention on the server.  These can be as remarkable as an entire town, to something more modest as a nice building or sculpture.

In this week's Server Spotlight, we will be focusing on Glasgrow, the hot new 8x city built almost exclusively by our resident field moderator ShadowScale, using his wits, creativity, and a lot of MCEdit!  Modeled after a kind of suburban atmosphere, the town features a commercial heart with a shot and hotel, overlooking a lovely fountain pool, sandwiched between 16 three-story townhouses for giant families to live in.  The whole town is itself dwarfed by a pair of statues off on its west side, a tourist attraction dedicated to the two server Owners.  ^^

Though its currently too far to be connected by road, Glasgrow is still accessible via the Spawnington Transit Hub, where Glasgrow teleporters exist for both normal and giant players.  Look for the normal teleporter on the first floor of the Transit Hub, all the way towards the back near where the giant elevator is (near Laputa).  ^^

In case you're worried about heading to Glasgrow only to be trampled over by 8x pedestrian traffic, not to worry... the main teleporter is in a secured and visible booth in the town square, and all road have groves for safe travel by halflings and tinies.  The entire town itself has lots of accommodations for normal and tiny players, although of course it stands to reason that it's probably best to visit Glasgrow as an 8x if you're not one to watch where other people are going.  ;)

The town is no commercial hotspot, but it's certainly on its way there what with the beautiful and glitzy Macro-Mart.  Given that so few stores on the server cater to 8x players, its a refreshing change of pace to finally do some shopping without having to micronize or bend down on your hands and knees... certainly helps to finally try out clothes that don't make you look fat, or shoes that fit and look stylish at the same time.  Items are currently sparse with few of them on sale yet, but expect this to change over time as more workers are hired and more customers are forthcoming.

The fountain pool is certainly a fun little resort with diving boards, toy pirate ships to play with your tiny friends, and an ode to the greatest thing since sliced bread.  But if you're exhausted and don't have a home to go to in Glasgrow, fear not as you always have the Step On Inn 2.0 to offer you some hospitality. Inside you will be treated to the most luxurious ballroom lobby this side of Eclipse, with a bar area and a reception desk that seconds as a hotel suite for your little friends.  The bedrooms themselves are cozy and spacious, with a touch of home... literally.  :)

All 18 townhouses peppered throughout Glasgrow are intentionally samey... we provide the template, its up to you, the prospective resident, to decorate it as you see fit.  That may include a new painted exterior, a nice new tailed roof, new furniture, or simply a new house sign... it's up to you, the sky's the limit!

The interiors offer the latest in cutting edge spacious design, the likes of which have never been seen before on the server.  Even an 8x would quickly find himself or herself a dwarf in his/her house.... and that's GOOD.  It's about time you were afforded room to stretch your legs in.  :)
The carpets use cutting edge lighting technology to avoid the ghastly eye-glare and terrifyingly-large electric bills caused by those ancient redstone lamp floors.  Finally you too can live like your 1x neighbor with the decency of a seamless carpet.  :)

And tell me, when was the last time you saw an 8x house with a basement, huh?
In normal lands the cost of digging up such a huge cavity into the earth was simply too prohibitive to ever be a factor, but not so in Glasgrow!  Here, every 8x has the right to storage room beyond anything you've ever dreamed of!!  Feel free to buy as much junk as possible... you'll have plenty of room in the basement to store it away and forget about it.  :P

And lest you think all this isn't big enough, feel free to travel West from the city square to meet Giga Breadzilla and Cayzilla, to impossibly-large statues that stretch from bedrock all the way up to ceiling height.  In case you thought the statues at Eclipse were ridiculously big, these titanesses -- ever keeping up a watchful eye over Glasgrow -- are bound to humble even the most intimidating 8x.  But make no mistake, they stand as a testament to the true power of the Big Sister server... the power to leverage great people, strong passions, amazing technology, and an embrace of the irreverent and fun, to make what was once thought to be impossible, possible.  If anything, perhaps a little too possible... but all the same... :)

Have fun, and see you at Glasgrow!

Thank you!

Happy Hearts [and Hooves] Day!!!!

Alo people,

A couple of news items to get out of the way.  ^^

First the good news... WALL SINA HAS BEEN FINISHED!!!  Many thanks to all the players who have helped in the very fast construction of the wall (or the lighting up of the Spawnington metropolitan area), sometimes even risking life and limb to protect us all!  This wall stands as a testament to your dedication and willingness to adhere to general design guidelines... hopefully it was as fun as it was invigorating.  ^^

Behold a birds eye view of this beauty:

Next, the bad news...

Protecting the citizens of Spawnington is now a moot point, since an overwhelming majority of forumites have voted heinously in favor of the "Keep Inventory" rule.  I can't stress enough how horrible this is for the thrill and feeling of accomplishment that is Survival play -- this will definitely reduce the fear of dying, and thus reward players who are silly and jaded enough to use death as a mode of transportation.  Try that IRL, and you may find out it's not exactly a good habit.  ;)

But a vote is a vote, and so we will be instituting this hideous game rule over the weekend.  On the bright side, this probably will reduce overall stress on the staff as they no longer have to listen to crying and whining about lost god weapons (unless the person accidentally presses "Q" over a lava pit).  The game rule also cannot stop buffs from getting lost, so there's at least something to remind players that they're human (even if it's superhuman strength, ironically).  ;P

So yes, I guess it's not all that bad...

And lastly, yes Happy Valentine's Day to those for whom this day is simply not just another work day!  I wish you well in your lovely endeavors, and hope you're not snowbound either [like I am].  :)

Help Build Wall Sina!!!

Fellow residents of Spawnington!!!

Tired of being mugged at night by hordes of zombies?  Tired of getting your crops and your livestock blown up by giant creepers?  Tired of Spawnington being as dangerous as a warzone?!

Fear not, for now we have devised a new strategy that will not only keep the mobs at bay, but also help mark Spawnington's city borders too!

It's called Wall Sina!!  and you can help built it today!  :D

All around Spawnington is the outline of each wall section!  Assuming you're willing to bring your own materials, you can:

  • fill the central column with stone brick stairs.
  • fill the adjacent columns with spruce planks
  • fill the outlying columns with staggered stone-brick blocks
  • fill the remaining space with all oak planks
  • fill the tops of the walls with with half slabs and fences
  • add torches in key portions of the wall
  • and finally, for the areas walled off in Spawnington, cover these with torch light to prevent mobs from ever spawning inside!
We can't do something to stop the constant invasion and make Spawnington a beautiful and safe place to live!!!

And for those curious to know what this looks like, see the screenshot below:

Ode to Ownership

My fellow server players,

I wasn't originally intending to write this, but I think it is time I rehashed the old Owner's Creed idea.  I think it is necessary to know a little more about me, given I still remain one of the greatest enigmas on this server, and its understandable if that may make people uneasy or uncomfortable, or lead to some mistakes being committed.

Anyway, this is a long read so don't hesitate to take your time reading it or not read it at all.  But if you do, I hope it will be a fun and amazing learning experience.  :)

JVM Woes!

Alo everyone,

I have been noticing a steady rise of cases whereby Mion's Auto-Installer doesn't seem to work, and although in some cases it is due to legacy residuals causing problems (e.g., the old Minecraft Launcher, Magic Launcher), in an overwhelming majority of cases it is due to the fact that the custom JVM arguments required to launch Gulliver Forged do not get added to the new profile.  It's a mystery to me why this occurs (often rather inconsistently), and although I'm quick to blame Windows on it (since it's almost always on a Windows box that these issues get reported), it could very well be a Minecraft Launcher update that is interfering with Mion's Auto Installer.

In the meantime, I have updated my Auto-Installer guide to urge a review of the JVM arguments before continuing...

https://www.dropbox.com/s/958pdolca8sqo55/Gulliver162Installation_ForgeAutoInstaller.pdf

When helping new players install Gulliver, should they have issues getting Gulliver Forged to launch (even after carefully reviewing the guide), always be sure to have them check whether their Launch profile looks exactly like the below image, with the line:

-XMx1G -Dfml.ignorePatchDiscrepancies=true

...clearly typed in the JVM Arguments line.

Thank you.  ^^

Everything in Moderation

Alo people!

So far I've managed to whip out creeds for every available rank there is, but with one very notable exception... Moderators!

Yes, Moderators themselves are bound to a creed, a way of being, and specific rules and responsibilities they have to adhere to relatively closely.  That's not to say there can't be any leeway (much like with other player ranks), but the document should be a fairly close representation of the kind of people I'm looking for to fill this rank.  It's a much longer read than before, but epic and cool in scale... I'd advise everyone to check it out.  :)

So without further ado, I present to you... the Moderator's Creed:
